When the Seattle Seahawks traded Russell Wilson they left themselves without a clear plan for how they will proceed at the quarterback position. They acquired Drew Lock in the Wilson trade, but nothing about his NFL career has given us reason to believe he’s a viable starter.

That has left them needing to find a suitable option outside of the organization. One of their potential options seemed to be Deshaun Watson, but it was reported that they are out of the running for the Texans QB.

Now, they have reportedly made calls about two other veteran QBs who could potentially be available right now. According to Josina Anderson, the Seahawks have called the Atlanta Falcons about Matt Ryan and the Cleveland Browns about Baker Mayfield.

Matt Ryan’s availability seems unlikely with Deshaun Watson choosing the Browns over the Falcons. It would also be a bit of a surprising move for the Seahawks as they seemed to be heading for a rebuild after trading Wilson and releasing Bobby Wagner.

On the other hand, a trade for Mayfield could make a lot of sense. Now that the Browns have Deshaun Watson, they’re going to need to deal Mayfield. He is also the kind of QB the Seahawks could need if they aren’t sold on a rookie. They got some useful pieces when they traded Wilson and acquired picks they could use to build around Mayfield.

Mayfield may be coming off of a disappointing season, but we aren’t far removed from him leading one of the NFL’s worst franchises to their first playoff win since the mid 90s. He’d probably be able to figure out how to make it work with the Seahawks.

The NFL rumor mill continues to churn out some interesting possibilities.
