Seiya Suzuki may not come with the pomp and circumstance of Shohei Ohtani, but the 27-year-old Japanese slugger is a very big deal. He comes to Major League Baseball after hitting .317 with 38 home runs and 88 RBIs in 132 games for Hiroshima last season.

After signing with the Cubs during the offseason, Suzuki was introduced with Chicago on Friday. During his introductory press conference, he walked into the room in his new jersey, which had No. 27 stitched across the back.

When he was asked if there was any reason for his number selection, he had a tremendous answer. Suzuki had been using his translator for his responses throughout the press conference.

Not when it came to his reasoning for No. 27. Suzuki flashed a big smile and gave the answer to that question on his own in English.

“Mike Trout,” he said, before turning to the cameras in the room and adding “I love you.”

Suzuki signed a five-year, $85 million contract with the Cubs and is expected to make the opening day lineup. While it may take some time for him to transition to MLB play, he was a dominant multi-tool, Trout-esque player during his time with the Hiroshima Toyo Carp.

He will try to emulate the success of the person who inspired him to wear No. 27 with Chicago this season and will be joining the time right in the middle of his prime. It will be fun to see Suzuki interact with Trout if they ever get the chance to meet.
