This summer, Serena Williams returned to Wimbledon for the first time since 2022. She was served a quick singles exit after an opening round loss to Maya Joint.
She did not appear at her post-match press conference. Was that decision a result of poor sportsmanship?
Pressers at the event are mandatory for players. Those that disobey are subject to fines of up to $50,000.
The Grand Slam rulebook states “unless unable to appear on reasonable grounds (for instance illness or injury)”, players must attend post-match press conferences.

Williams will avoid penalty despite her absence. Her agent filled followers in on her reason for ducking media.
Why’d Serena Williams skip Wimbledon presser?

The initial response to the announcement was overwhelmingly negative. Fans chalked it up to her being a sore loser. She couldn’t face the media following defeat.
Williams provided a statement in the moments that followed setback.
“It was really great being back at Wimbledon,” she said. “I never expected to be here. The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything.”
That response was one of gratitude, but it did not provide reasoning for the press conference snub, which further fueled an online fire. On Wednesday, Williams’ agent quickly cleared up any misconceptions.
The tennis star is injured.
Serena Williams has suffered a knee injury and her doubles return with sister Venus is in doubt, as per @trlkershaw‘s story in The Times.
Is also why she was excused media duties on Tuesday night.

Serena Williams suffered a knee injury in the loss to Joint. As stated above, it is a legitimate exception. She will not be fined for missing her presser, an absence that was not the result of poor sportsmanship.
“Serena tweaked her right knee in the first set,” said agent Jill Smoller. “She was therefore excused from her media obligations.”
The injury could put her doubles return in doubt. She is set to team up with sister, Venus, later this week. Williams’ agent insists she’s doing all she can to recover.
Time will tell if she’s able to make that return. It would represent an unfortunate exit following unnecessary backlash.
Williams again demonstrated strong character despite criticism with a post on Instagram. She congratulated Maya Joint on the win while reflecting on her return.
Hopefully, she’s able to give it a go in doubles competition with her sister.
