This season didn’t quite go according to plan for Genoa. After finishing 11th last season, Genoa struggled throughout the 2021-22 season. They won only 4 matches all season long and only had 1 win entering the month of March.
That put them in a fight to avoid relegation to Serie B for next season and this weekend they officially lost that fight. When they lost 3-0 at Napoli, it officially sealed their fate with one match still left to play. While it was a sad day for Genoa, fans of rival Sampdoria rejoiced in their suffering.
After Genoa had guaranteed their relegation, Sampdoria’s fans held a funeral for the club.

The funeral was revenge for Sampdoria fans after Genoa fans had celebrated their relegation in 2011.
Genoa’s relegation brings an end to a Serie A run that dates all the way back to the 2007-08 season. Now they’ll spend next season trying to fight their way back into Serie A.
Sampdoria will also spend the 2022-23 season looking for an improved result after nearly suffering the same fate as Genoa. Sampdoria is currently in 15th place in Serie A with 36 points. That puts them only 7 points ahead of 18th place Cagliari, who currently finds themselves just inside the relegation zone.
Sampdoria has been waiting 11 years for this moment to get their revenge, but now they’ll need to step up their game next season if they want to avoid giving Genoa the chance to celebrate their demise next season.
