A Texas high school football team pulled off a comeback for the ages late last week, scoring 20 points in the final 53 seconds of the game to stun a ranked opponent in a dramatic 40-39 victory.

With less than a minute remaining in the first game of district play, the Shelbyville Dragons trailed the Joaquin Rams by 19 points. The ending of the game appeared to be a foregone conclusion because how could the Dragons possibly score 20 points in so little time? Not only was there no time, but the Dragons were also playing the Rams, who were ranked fifth and were the state runner-up in 2025. No chance, right?

How did Shelbyville High School score 20 points in 53 seconds?

Proving the old Yogi Berra adage true, the Shelbyville Dragons showed that it ain’t over ’til it’s over. Here’s how they did it, according to KICKS 105 FM.

Behind 39-20, Gavin McDonald threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Williams with 53 seconds remaining in the game, making it 39-26.

The score was then 39–28 after McDonald hit Bryant Scarborough for a successful two-point conversion.

Scarborough’s subsequent kickoff was then squibbed down the sidelines and eventually recovered by Shelbyville’s Hunter Harvey at the Joaquin 7-yard line.

McDonald then found Scarborough in the end zone for another touchdown on the very next play with 45 seconds left on the clock. Joaquin almost scored two points when the two-point attempt was intercepted, but Shelbyville stopped it. Score: Joaquin 39, Shelbyville 34.

The comeback almost didn’t get completed

Next, Shelbyville’s Andy Johnson recovered an onside kick at the 50-yard line. Then, with Shelbyville facing fourth and 19 from their own 41, Joaquin recovered the ball after multiple laterals led to a fumble, but a very fortuitous penalty gave Shelbyville a first down and time for just one more play near midfield.

With four seconds remaining, Gavin McDonald took the snap, rolled left, and launched a Hail Mary that Bryant Scarborough caught around the 3-yard line. With tacklers hanging on, the senior receiver forced his way into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. Final Score: Shelbyville 40, Joaquin 39.

The full sequence of Shelbyville’s miraculous comeback can be viewed in the game broadcast below. It’s well worth a watch, if just to hear the Shelbyville broadcaster shout, “Touchdown, Touchdown, Touchdown, Dragons! Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me?” at the conclusion of the “Miracle Minute.”

According to Danny Merrell of KICKS 105 FM, “This one stings for the Rams, but it’s not a loss that will keep them out of the playoffs. I believe that both these teams will eventually make the postseason and make deep runs toward a state title. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see these two teams play again in the Regional Finals.”

With the win, Shelbyville improved to 4-2 and took sole possession of first place in District 12-2, Division I, while the loss dropped Joaquin to 3-2 on the season.
