It appears Temple has decided that it is time for a change. When the Owls host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights today, they will reportedly be doing so with a new starting quarterback.

For the first two weeks of the season, the Temple offense was led by D’Wan Mathis, but he struggled through those two starts. In their first game, Temple was held scoreless by Duke, losing the game by 30.

In Week 2, they took on Lafayette in a matchup where they were expected to find much more success. Unfortunately, Mathis struggled again early on, leading to him being replaced by Kurt Warner’s son, E.J.

It seems that Temple liked what they saw in that relief appearance as ESPN reported today that Warner would be the team’s starter against Rutgers.

EJ Warner will reportedly start for Temple against Rutgers

Warner was impressive in Temple’s matchup against Lafayette. After replacing Mathis, Warner completed 14 of 19 pass attempts for 173 yards and a pair of TDs. The Owls won the game 30-14.

This week, Warner will have a bit of tougher test ahead of him. In his first career start, the true freshman will be taking on a Rutgers defense that has only given up 28 points across their first 2 games.

The matchup represents a big opportunity for Warner. Rutgers is heavily favored against Temple, but the Warner family knows a thing or two about succeeding as an underdog. A win here would be a big statement to begin Warner’s time as the Temple starter.

Leading an upset against a Big 10 opponent in his first start would put EJ Warner on the radar of many college football fans.
