Spencer Rattler is in line to be the starting quarterback for the South Carolina football team next season.

The passer transferred from Oklahoma following the 2021 campaign after being benched in place of freshman Caleb Williams. Now, he’s ready to get back in the driver’s seat and return to his first-year form.

That freshman season saw Rattler become a Heisman candidate after leading the Sooners to a 9-2 record. He’ll now look to do the same in Columbia for the Gamecocks.

Rattler has impressed thus far, and he’s getting closer to completing his first spring practice session in South Carolina. The team will hold the annual Spring Game on Saturday night, signaling the end of opening practice.

With the spring coming to an end, Rattler took to the podium this week to speak on a variety of topics. One response, in particular, should have Gamecock fans excited for the upcoming season.

Rattler was asked about cornerback Cam Smith, and what’s he done to prepare the team for the 2022 campaign. The quarterback offered high praise.

“Cam Smith is the truth. He’s probably the best DB I’ve gone against in practice during my college career.”

That college career includes three seasons practicing against his former Oklahoma teammates, compared to one spring in Columbia. A bit of a slight to the guys in the Sooners’ secondary.

Smith has performed well, though. The rising junior has picked off five passes over his last two seasons with the Gamecocks, and he should be a draft selection with another solid campaign.

Rattler goes on to compare the corner to a pair of NFL talents.

“He is long and he is fast… I kind of look at him like a Derwin James or Jalen Ramsey type of guy. He is really good.”

For South Carolina, the praise is welcomed. For Oklahoma fans, though… not so much.
