Spencer Rattler spoke on Monday about his future with the Gamecocks as the team’s bowl game nears. South Carolina will be playing against Notre Dame in the Gator Bowl on December 30th.

This week, the passer announced that he plans to play in the game rather than opting out in preparation for the NFL Draft.

Rattler referenced his passion to play for head coach Shane Beamer in his response about the Gator Bowl, saying that it’s “the least he can do” to show gratitude for giving him a chance. But while many would take his decision to play as a positive sign about returning to college, Rattler’s answer has given Gamecocks fans hesitance.

Hear his full response below.

“It’s important to me because Coach Beamer’s been great to me all year. For him even bringing me here, it was a blessing. The least I can do is play in the bowl game, so I had to do it for him.” -Spencer Rattler

While he remained mum on his NFL future, it certainly seemed like a farewell to Gamecock Nation. That’s disappointing for South Carolina supporters who just started seeing the quarterback’s potential over his final two games of the season.

Against Tennessee and Clemson, Rattler threw for a combined 798 yards and eight touchdowns to lead his squad to back-to-back wins over top 10 opponents. Prior, he’d thrown just eight touchdown passes all year.

He could view this as a way to strike while the iron’s hot, particularly if he can have one more memorable performance against the Irish in the bowl game.

Many on social media believe that to be the case, and they’re posting reactions online.

One account said, “It certainly seems like Spencer Rattler is leaving for the NFL,” while another commented, “Does that sound like he’s going pro?”

It sounds like it if you read between the lines.

Gamecocks fans, enjoy the Gator Bowl. It might be the last time you see Spencer Rattler in a South Carolina uniform.
