The 10th annual Stan’s Donut Run in Chicago was held last weekend, a 5K and 10K race where competitors don their fastest shoes and push themselves to the limit in pursuit of mini donuts, including 5-hour ENERGY®’s new Boston Cream and Jelly Donut flavors, the best finisher’s medal in the game, and everlasting glory.

5-hour ENERGY® Debuts Boston Cream and Jelly Donut Flavors At Stan’s Donut Race

Stan’s Donut Run in Chicago was held at Soldier Field this year and brought in 4,052 racers across the 5K and 10K events, with 2,808 5K racers and 1,244 10K racers.

The race has become a staple of the Summer racing scene in the Windy City, and it brings out the best runners in the region. This year’s overall winner in the 10K was Cris Valencia, who peeled off a blistering fast chip time of 33:43.08, which breaks out to a 5:26/mile pace. Cris blew away the 10K competition with second-place racer Thomas Border finishing in 35:47.37, over two minutes after Valencia crossed the finish line in first place.

Those insane split times were made possible by 5-hour ENERGY®, which provided all racers with “fuel for the run” in the form of their new donut-flavored energy shots, quite possibly the perfect pairing for the donut-loving running community.

The 5K race was equally as competitive. Anyone who has run a true 5K at all-out pace knows that the 5K is sneakily one of, if not THE most difficult, racing distances in competitive running.

Racer Derek Roberts understood the assignment, finishing in a time of 16:47.88 with a split time of 5 minutes and 25 seconds. Second-place finisher Eamonn Kenah (of Atlanta) wasn’t too far behind, finishing with a 5:41 split time and crossing the finish line at 17:37.15. A 5K time of 18:14 puts any runner in the top 5% for all males in the 18-22 age range. So these are elite times.

Taylor Kriha was the top 5K finisher in the women’s division with a time of 18:20.83, running 5:55 miles for the 3.1-mile course. And in the 10K, Maureen Knaus was the top women’s finisher in a time of 41:10.91 with an average mile time of 6:39 for the 6.2 miles.

Did someone say donuts?

Donuts are front and center at the Stan’s Donut Run. In addition to 5-hour ENERGY®’s new Boston Cream and Jelly Donut flavors, there were actual donut stations along the race course for runners to fuel during the race.

Located at miles 1 and 2 were official donut stations where runners could stop and fuel up on bite-sized mini doughnuts alongside the typical water stations. The donut flavors included Vanilla Sprinkled Cake, Old Fashioned, Lemon Pistachio Old Fashioned, Strawberry Glazed, Red Velvet, Chocolate Sprinkled Cake, and, of course, glazed donuts.

Stan’s Donuts is a classic Westwood-Los Angeles-style donut shop that was run by the man himself, Stan Berman, until he passed away two years ago at the age of 94. They have dozens of locations around Chicagoland and have brought West Coast donut culture to Chicago in a way the city was desperate for.

Food races are my jam, specifically donut-related ones. There was a donut cycling race last week, a 34-mile race, where competitors had time shaved off their total racing time for each donut they ate. I’d 100% be down for that.

I am also VERY interested in the Marathon du Médoc in France, a marathon through French wine country where racers live the good life. There are 23 wine-tasting stations during the race alongside steak and oyster tasting stations. If that’s not the perfect French wine country race, then I don’t know what is.

In total, over $5,000 was raised for the Cal’s Angels charity at this year’s Stan’s Donut Run. The charity grants wishes and helps raise awareness for children battling cancer.
