It’s no secret that Syracuse football coach Fran Brown is a unique individual who sometimes has a hard time managing his temper.
Brown showed as much last season when he got into a heated incident with a Miami fan who mocked Brown over the fact that he does not shower after his team loses.
But Brown may have taken things a step too far on Thursday night in his team’s ACC road loss to Pitt, and it could have serious consequences.

Fran Brown Appeared To Lunge At ACC Official
Brown and the Orange dropped to 1-2 on the season and 0-2 in ACC play with a 27-13 loss to the Panthers on national television. On top of that, Brown was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after he appeared to lunge at an ACC official in hopes of making the official flinch.
Not only did the official not flinch, but he also flagged the head coach for the incident.
Brown claims that he was flagged by the official for something he said, rather than his actions.
“I spoke out of a tone, which I shouldn’t have said,” he told reporters in his postgame press conference. “I just stated that I feel like you’re effing cheating us. So you guys are effing cheating, and I shouldn’t have said that, (I) should be able to hold my composure as being the face of our football program. Can’t say words like that to a referee.
“So I shouldn’t have said that you guys are effing cheaters. That’s what I said. I mean, of course I didn’t say effing. I said another word. I mean, I shouldn’t have said that.”
However, it’s pretty hard to ignore the video. Brown very clearly lunges in the direction of the official. Whether he intended to actually make contact or not, only he knows. It’s very likely he just wanted to evoke a reaction.
But either way, it’s a major line crossed. You cannot, under any circumstances, threaten an official. And now Brown is potentially staring down far worse punishment than just a 15-yard flag.
