Houston Texans fan next to tropical storm
There is being excited about a new football jersey, and then there is waking up before sunrise to stand outside a stadium while an actual tropical storm is approaching your city. Houston Texans fans apparently decided the second option sounded perfectly reasonable on Tuesday as thousands chased the team’s new jerseys.
Fans began gathering outside Reliant Stadium before dawn, with the line eventually stretching along the Loop 610 feeder as Tropical Storm Edouard approached the Upper Texas coast. The Houston Chronicle documented the scene, which somehow looked less like people buying football jerseys and more like Houston had received an emergency evacuation order specifying everyone needed a C.J. Stroud shirt first.
Texans Fans Were Not Letting A Tropical Storm Ruin Merch Day
The timing was objectively incredible.
Edouard was strengthening Tuesday morning while the Texans Team Shop prepared to open at 9 a.m. By 10 a.m., the National Hurricane Center had the storm packing 50 mph sustained winds before it eventually made landfall near Johnson Bayou, Louisiana, with maximum sustained winds around 60 mph.
The storm track brought heavy rain and gusty conditions toward southeastern Texas.
Texans fans saw all of that and apparently asked the only important question: are the jerseys still available?

The team itself described the merchandise launch as unlike anything its stadium store had experienced. The Texans recap said the line stretched across the plaza while security allowed customers inside only a few at a time. People emerged carrying handfuls of jerseys, helmets, and other Rivalries gear while ten registers worked through the crowd.
Nothing brings a city together quite like limited-edition football merchandise and deteriorating weather conditions.
The Texans Even Made Fans A Fake Excuse Letter
Houston leaned directly into the insanity rather than pretending this was a normal Tuesday morning.
The Texans posted a fake excuse letter on Instagram giving fans permission to miss work so they could purchase merchandise, because apparently “I need to buy a white football jersey before the tropical storm arrives” did not already sound convincing enough to management.
The frenzy was for uniforms Houston will wear exactly once this season, when the Texans host Indianapolis on Thursday Night Football on Nov. 19.
The uniform design incorporates H-Town Blue, Battle Red and Liberty White while borrowing details from Houston’s blue-and-white street tiles, the “Be Someone” bridge and the city’s custom-car culture.
It is a legitimately cool uniform.
Still, lining up before sunrise with tropical weather bearing down is a fairly aggressive endorsement.
The NFL said its Rivalries launch became Fanatics’ best-selling merchandise release when the program debuted last year, so Houston’s response suggests the gimmick still has plenty of juice.
