There is a growing push within the Houston Texans organization to sign quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in free-agency, according to CBS Reporter Jonathan Jones.
The Texans plan for the 2023 season is to sign free-agent Jimmy G and play him while also drafting a quarterback in the first round of the upcoming draft. The plan would be to sit the rookie quarterback for a year and allow him to develop before taking over the starting role.
Currently, the Texans hold the No. 2 and No. 12 picks in the draft, and have over $40 million in cap space available. This means that the team could easily fit both Garoppolo and their future quarterback into their roster for the 2023 season.
The Texans have recently hired Bobby Slowik as their offensive coordinator, who previously worked with Garoppolo during his time with the San Francisco 49ers. This familiarity could prove to be beneficial in executing their offensive game plan quickly and efficiently.
However, the success of this plan will largely depend on whether Garoppolo is willing to sign with the Texans. As a free agent, he has the option to choose his next team. The New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders have also been mentioned as potential landing spots for Garoppolo.
