The Houston Texans‘ rookie quarterback, C.J. Stroud, the second overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has made a strong impression during the team’s spring practices, according to report from Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer.

The Texans organization has been tight-lipped about their developments, but reports suggest that Stroud has shown early signs of justifying his high draft position.

Breer highlighted Stroud’s evident arm talent, which translated well onto the practice fields during May and June. However, it is not just his physical abilities that have impressed coaches and teammates alike.

Stroud has displayed a remarkable poise and maturity, seemingly unfazed by the demands of the professional level, likely attributed to his experience playing in a pro-style offense at Ohio State.

The coaching staff and front-office personnel have observed Stroud’s leadership qualities and his ability to connect with his teammates, even veterans on the team. This ease of rapport and natural leadership have contributed to his smooth integration into the Texans’ organization.

Additionally, Stroud already had a pre-existing relationship with his position coach, Jerrod Johnson, who coached him during the Elite 11 finals in 2019. Their bond has facilitated Stroud’s transition into the league, providing a sense of familiarity and support.

Furthermore, the Texans have assembled a knowledgeable coaching staff around Stroud, including offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik and offensive assistant Shane Day, who have created a solid infrastructure to nurture the rookie’s development.

These factors, combined with Stroud’s talent and work ethic, have raised expectations that he will hit the ground running when training camp commences in late July.

Earlier in June, first-year Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans expressed his astonishment at Stroud’s performance during the team’s OTAs. Stroud seized the first-team snaps at quarterback, overtaking veteran Davis Mills, and appeared noticeably more comfortable as the practices progressed.

Quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson praised Stroud’s footwork and timing, stating that the rookie is already well ahead of expectations in these areas.

Stroud’s strong showing in spring practices suggests that he is currently the favorite to assume the starting role for the Texans when the regular season begins. With a college career that included 85 touchdowns, only 12 interceptions, and completion rates exceeding 69 percent, Stroud’s potential as a franchise quarterback is evident.

As the Texans prepare for the upcoming season, all eyes will be on C.J. Stroud, as the young quarterback aims to prove himself on the professional stage and lead the team to new heights.
