The Texas Longhorns will take on the East Carolina Pirates this weekend as they look to advance to the College World Series. They’ll have to get through one of the most raucous environments in college baseball to do so, though.

East Carolina is a Group of Five university located in Greenville, NC. They occasionally make waves on the football field, having seen notable players like David Garrard and Chris Johnson come through the program. Not much is seen on the basketball court.

But the fans live for baseball.

ECU has been a power in the college baseball ranks over the years, tallying 32 NCAA tournament appearances. That includes making the field in 18 of the last 24 seasons. They’ve been to seven Super Regionals since 2000 but for whatever reason haven’t been able to crack the Omaha bracket.

They’re hoping to change that this year.

Part of the Pirates’ success comes from their home field advantage at Clark-LeClair Stadium. They get to utilize that crowd in the upcoming Super Regionals as the team landed the No. 8 national seed in the NCAA tournament. And it appears that the environment has already gotten in the head of their opponent.

Texas head coach trashes ECU fanbase

Longhorns head coach David Pierce commented on having to travel to ECU for the upcoming series. His words were far from complimentary.

Take a listen.

“You have an outfield fence that’s five, maybe six feet tall, that people are hanging over. The bullpens are open, people are hanging over them… I’ve been there many a times, had players have beers thrown on them, had security issues in the bullpen. They really don’t care.

“They call themselves ‘The Jungle’ and they act like it.”

Wow. In less than 30 seconds, Pierce trashed the entire Pirate fanbase. You can rest assured that ECU fans won’t forget about these comments. In fact, it will likely make them even more menacing for the upcoming series.

We’ll see if Texas can handle ‘The Jungle’ or if they’ll have to wave the white flag to the Pirates.
