Texas high school football team sparks sportsmanship debate.
Life Oak Cliff travelled to Bonham for some Texas high school football action over the weekend and returned home with a blowout victory. The Lions racked up 105 points in a non-competitive game.
The final blow came with less than 30 seconds remaining in the contest. Life Oak Cliff’s quarterback defied his coach to throw a late touchdown pass. It’s now sparked a sportsmanship debate on social media.
Was it fair game? I’m not fully aware of the context. I don’t know if something happened during the game to create animosity, or if there was any pre-existing bad blood between coaches and players. Given the programs are located an hour apart, I’d doubt the latter.
Even if without that context, points that can be made for either side of the argument.
Late TD sparks Texas high school football debate
Bonham competes at the 4A level in the University Interscholastic League (UIL). Its campus sits a little over an hour outside of Dallas, where Life Oak Cliff resides.

Life Oak Cliff, who competes at the 3A level, made the trip north for Friday night lights. It entered the matchup at 2-0 having outscored its previous opponents a combined 115-20.
It added to that total in Game 3. Bonham stood no chance.
It was a bloodbath from the start. Life Oak Cliff scored 35 points in the first quarter to build a three-touchdown lead. From there, the Lions outscored the Warriors 70-0 to win 105-14.
With less than a minute left to play, Life Oak Cliff had the ball near the redzone. It looked like its coaching staff wanted to run the final seconds off the clock. The quarterback chose to score.

In the video posted above, you can see a coach on the sidelines tap his knee, presumably a signal to the quarterback to kneel. The passer, instead, calls an audible and heaves a touchdown pass to a receiver in the endzone.
It was an obvious victory formation situation. The call to kneel the ball and end the game was evident. The offensive line didn’t even block. The coach turned in disgust when he saw the ball launched in the air.
The starting signal caller ignored his superiors to run up the score. The immediate social media reaction can be seen below.
“Oak Cliff ‘character’ for ya right there.”
“Ok this is bad… Real bad. You just don’t do this up by that much… There’s a way to handle a blowout and mitigate it… This isn’t it.”
“Shameless.”
“Zero class.”
Life Oak Cliff caught heat for scoring late. The touchdown was unnecessary. They’d already hung nearly 100 points on the scoreboard. The Lions are not the only ones to blame, though.
Bonham refused to run the clock.
The school opted against a running clock in the second half despite the blowout. It forced players to stay on the field longer rather than speed up an imminent outcome.
Life Oak Cliff also had its back up players in. It was simply playing the game.
The decision to air it out was certainly in poor taste. The players saw a chance to hit the 100-point threshold, and they took it.
The home team isn’t devoid of blame, though. They had an opportunity to limit scoring and opted not to do so.
