The Carolina Panthers have left many football fans scratching their heads after rumors surfaced that the team’s front office may be considering taking a gamble on a raw, unproven prospect with the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

According to long-time Panthers legend, linebacker-turned-analyst Thomas Davis, there are “a couple of guys upstairs” within the Panthers front office who are “enamored” by the physical ability of Anthony Richardson, a quarterback out of the University of Florida who has yet to completely prove himself.

This is a surprising development, as most experts had predicted that Alabama’s Bryce Young or Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud would be the top picks in this year’s draft.

Thomas Davis, who now works for the NFL Network, believes the pick would be “very, very surprising” and that the team was taking a major gamble by considering Richardson over more established prospects.

It appears that the Panthers are still very much undecided about who to select with the first overall pick. A recent report by Sports Illustrated indicated that the team “still doesn’t know” who they will pick, despite having made a massive trade with the Chicago Bears to secure the top spot.

The trade, which included multiple high picks and wide receiver DJ Moore, was widely seen as a bold move by the Panthers, who have struggled to find consistent success in recent years. However, it now appears that the team may be having second thoughts about who to select with the top pick.

It remains to be seen whether the rumors about Anthony Richardson will ultimately prove to be true, or whether the Panthers will ultimately decide to go in a different direction. However, one thing is clear: the 2023 NFL Draft is shaping up to be one of the most unpredictable in recent memory, with even the top teams struggling to make up their minds about who to pick.
