During Saturday’s game between the New York Mets and Yankees, Tom Hanks had an encounter with mascot Mr. Met, who painted himself up to look like Hanks’ pal Wilson from the film Cast Away.
First, the Mets showed an image on the jumbotron from the film featuring Tom Hanks carefully placing Wilson on the ground. Then, they showed Tom Hanks seated in the front row of the game at Citi Field.
He and the rest of the crowd were then surprised by Mr. Met. Little did Hanks know, Mr. Met had a big red handprint on the side of his big head that looked like the famous bloody volleyball from the Oscar-winning film.
“Wilson!” Tom Hanks pretended to shout after Mr. Met revealed his surprise.
Tom Hanks and Wilson have appeared at least one other MLB game together
Tom Hanks’ encounter with his Cast Away volleyball buddy at the Mets game wasn’t the first time he has made an appearance at a Major League Baseball game with Wilson.
In 2022, Hanks threw out the first pitch at a Cleveland Guardians game against the San Francisco Giants. Before throwing the pitch, Hanks showed off Wilson to the crowd before setting him on the mound.
Unfortunately, much like in the movie, Wilson seemed to have a mind of his own and wouldn’t stay put where Hanks had placed him. At first, the broadcasters thought it was the wind blowing the volleyball around, but it wasn’t. It was just Wilson being Wilson.
