Tonopah Valley did not play its first game of the high school football season in Arizona as scheduled. The Phoenix face serious allegations of “inappropriate player-on-player behavior” and may not take the field — at all — in 2026.
Their entire schedule is at risk.
This latest high school football scandal leaves a lot of unanswered questions. Police are involved.
Tonopah Valley canceled its first game of the high school football season.
Tonopah Valley High School is located in Maricopa County, Arizona, approximately 50 miles west of Phoenix. The campus officially opened following the 2005-2006 school year. It serves a total enrollment of ~900 students in Grades 9-12.
The Phoenix, in school colors of scarlet and black, competes in Division 2A of the Arizona Interscholastic Association in the Metro 5 region. The high school football program had its best season in history in 2024-25.
Tonopah Valley finished at 12-1 with its only loss in the state semifinal by six points. Last year was not as successful. Although it finished at 4-1 in the Metro 5 region, those were the only four wins of the entire season. The Phoenix finish at 4-7.
It was supposed to begin the 2026 season on Friday against the Odyssey Institute. The Odyssey Institute for Advanced and International Studies is 25/30 miles from Tonopah Valley. The Minotaurs were ready to play. They were (almost) on the way.
And then the Phoenix suddenly canceled. It did not give a reason.
The Odyssey Institute has not yet been granted a forfeit win. The game is currently listed as a cancellation.
Faculty members are on leave amid an investigation.
Tonopah Valley is supposed to play its next high school football game on Friday against Scottsdale Christian Academy. According to Adam Beadle of ArizonaVarsity.com, head coach Mike Sheehan has not had any communication with the scheduled visitors. He does not know whether the Phoenix are going to play. The game could again be canceled at the last minute, just like last week.
All of this confusion stems from an ongoing investigation at Tonopah Valley. Saddle Mountain Unified School District’s superintendent was notified of a “potentially serious incident” on Friday, right before kickoff of the season-opener. Local law enforcement was contacted. Multiple faculty members were placed on administrative leave.
According to ABC15, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office took a report about high school football players “dry humping” while at a camp. Interviews were conducted about the allegations but no one wanted to press charges.
That leaves the remainder of the season in jeopardy. It is unclear as to how the Phoenix plan to proceed. Are the faculty members who are on leave also members of the coaching staff? If charges were not pressed, are the players cleared to play?
The clock is ticking on Week 2. Scottsdale Christian wants to know if it has a game. The Odyssey Institute wants a forfeit win.
