The ex-girlfriend of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is citing the need to “protect” herself as the explanation for recently unfollowing friend Brittany Mahomes on Instagram.
Kelce and social media influencer Kayla Nicole dated for three years before breaking up, and the superstar football player has since taken to dating perhaps the world’s most famous musician, Taylor Swift.
But it was Nicole who stole headlines recently.
Despite a still in-tact friendship, the influencer turned model unfollowed Mahomes, the wife of Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, on the social media platform.
Which led to a number of fans asking “why.”
The answer, apparently, is simple.
“I do think it’s important to publicly address this because I did publicly unfollow people,” Nicole told People. “The reality is I know these people in real life. And so, in real life, I’ve communicated to these people why I’ve had to publicly make the decisions that I made.”
Many fans speculated that the move was due to Mahomes’ growing relationship with Swift. The two even have a special handshake to celebrate Chiefs touchdowns.
But Nicole says that’s not the case.
“To everyone it’s like, ‘Oh, you broke up a year ago,’ and that meant it’s like a light switch, you turn it on and off and everything goes dead and black and you don’t ever speak to anyone ever again. That’s not reality. I have ongoing relationships with all parties involved.
“That’s a lot of history and friendship there, that doesn’t change overnight,” Kayla said. “But publicly, because things are happening so quickly and so publicly, I have to protect myself. That’s really all that is. The love is still there.”
Far be it for us to judge how someone mourns the end of a relationship. But it’s still a tough look for Nicole given the circumstances.
