Troy Aikman congratulated Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs on Monday following the franchise’s third Super Bowl win in the last five seasons. The former Dallas Cowboys passer was complimentary of the team, coaching staff, and ownership as he watches the next NFL dynasty take over.

Aikman, himself, was once part of a dynasty in Dallas, making four straight NFC Championships while winning three Super Bowls in that four-year span. He’s now officially passing the torch.

Aikman’s Cowboys were the cream of the NFC crop in the mid-90s, posting seven double-digit win seasons between 1991 and 1998. The signal caller won his first Lombardi trophy in 1992, and he’d win two more by 1995.

Since, the franchise has struggled in the postseason, failing to make it out of the Divisional Round over the last three decades.

But as Dallas has faded out of the spotlight, new organizations have taken that seat atop the pedestal.

We, of course, saw New England make an unprecedented run under Tom Brady in which it won six titles between 2001 and 2018. Now, though, the attention has turned to Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs have made the AFC title in each of his six pro seasons. That includes four Super Bowl appearances where he’s posted a 3-1 record as a starter.

Aikman, now in the FOX broadcast booth, knows just how difficult it is to get three rings.

Unfortunately, his congratulations were overshadowed by previous comments made about Mahomes and Co.

Troy Aikman’s 33% quip comes back to bite

With three championships already under his belt, Mahomes has now tied Aikman’s career output in just half the time. In the process, he revived a five-year old post that’s now recirculating online.

Mahomes’ play was celebrated even before he picked up his first Super Bowl win. The passer was doing things not often seen on the football field.

That included posting some pretty ridiculous numbers, which The Athletic opted to point out in a 2019 podcast.

“ICYMI: Patrick Mahomes has thrown 36% of Troy Aikman’s career touchdowns, in about 8% of the games,” a headline from that podcast read.

It landed a snarky reply from the Dallas Cowboys legend.

Sour grapes? They might be a bit sourer now.

Patrick Mahomes now has three championships in six years compared to Troy Aikman’s 11 NFL seasons. He now has a legitimate shot at giving Brady a run for his money given his age and team around him.

Aikman can’t say the same, he can only hope to eat those previous comments as the Chiefs’ bus rolls on.
