Tulane had an opportunity to win its college basketball game against Jackson State in regulation. And then the Green Wave called a timeout that did not exist.
They lost on a pair of technical foul free throws.
There may not be a more demoralizing way to lose a college basketball game this season. It was a Chris Webber moment in the same city, 33 years later.
Tulane lost the college basketball game to Jackson State.
Most major sportsbooks listed Tulane as an 11.5/12.5-point favorite over Jackson State on Thursday night. The Green Wave was coming off of a two-point win over UT Martin. The Tigers were coming off of a blowout loss to Texas Tech.
It did not go how Las Vegas expected.
Tulane took a four-point lead into the locker room at halftime but Jackson State rallied back during the second half. The Tigers tied the game at 81 with three minutes and two seconds remaining. Both teams traded buckets back and forth over the next 72 seconds. The score was tied again at 85 with one minute and 50 seconds remaining.
And then it got weird.
The Green Wave missed a layup with 35 seconds left on the clock. Jackson State had the opportunity to take its first lead of the game on its next possession. It missed a three-pointer with 13 seconds left. Tulane came down with the rebound.
Although the home team had 10 seconds to get the ball in the hoop to win the game, it failed to do so. But it did not go to overtime.
Calling a timeout that does not exist results in a technical foul.
Jackson State pressed hard on defense on the final offensive possession. Tulane got stuck in the corner with the clock ticking down to zero and tried to call a timeout. Not tried. Did.
Junior guard Krystian Lewis called a timeout with just under five seconds remaining. However, the Green Wave did not have a timeout remaining. He pulled a Chris Webber.
As a result of Lewis’ timeout, that did not exist, Tulane was called for a technical foul as a team. Not only did the technical foul result in a turnover, it gifted the Tigers with two free throws. Jackson State stepped up to the line and knocked them both down. The Green Wave could not hit a buzzer-beater to lose the game by a final score of 87-85.
WHAT AN ENDING IN NEW ORLEANS 😳

I do not know where to place blame here. Lewis should know whether or not he has a timeout before he calls a timeout. His teammates should help him out. The coaching staff should inform his players of the situation.
Regardless of who is at fault, Tulane suffered the most brutal loss of the college basketball season thus far.
