UCLA lost its first baseball game in Big 10 action on Saturday night against Oregon. The team will not make history in the 2026 season.
The Bruins were pushing to complete the first-ever 30-0 campaign in conference play. The setback will keep them out of the record books.
Emotions ran high as reality set in. At one point, sides had to be separated amid a shouting match involving rival coaches.
UCLA baseball is no longer perfect.
The Bruins swept each of their first eight series in the Big 10 before hosting the Ducks over the weekend. They improved to 25-0 with an 11-1 blowout in Game 1 of the set.
Game 2 was much closer. The two sides went back and forth across the first seven innings of play. Oregon got the last punch to secure victory.
UCLA struck first with four runs in its first at-bat. Oregon quickly followed with four runs of their own in the top of the second.
The Bruins regained the lead in the third, only for the Ducks to deadlock the score in the seventh. A run in the bottom of that frame gave UCLA a 6-5 advantage. It was short-lived.

Oregon scored four runs in the eighth. They’d win the game, 9-6.
The matchup was chippy throughout. These schools have history dating back to their time in the PAC 12. The hosts rode high following the Game 1 thrashing. The crowd was silenced on Saturday.
The testiness got started early in Los Angeles. Shortstop Roch Cholowsky was seen trash talking the Oregon pitching staff after a leadoff homer to start the contest.

Those emotions continued throughout the game. They came to a head a few innings later.
A Bruins coach was tossed.

Assistant Griffin Barnes was seen arguing with the Oregon dugout while exiting the field between the third and fourth innings. What was said to spark the confrontation is unclear. It resulted in both benches momentarily clearing.

The tension exploded as Oregon pitcher Collin Clarke made his way back to the dugout. Words were exchanged. Barnes heard something offensive. It stopped him in his tracks.
While voicing his anger to the Ducks, the coach nearly tumbled to the ground. It was as if a banana peel had been placed under his right foot. To add insult to injury, he was later tossed for his reaction.
The temper tantrum was the perfect encapsulation of the game itself. UCLA believed it was going to win. The cockiness was evident, fueling the home crowd to spew barbs Oregon’s way throughout the night.
“Ask Nike for more money!”
In the end, the Bruins slipped. They are no longer perfect. They can, however, still secure a ninth straight Big 10 series win with a victory in the rubber match.
