UCLA football fans did not support Bob Chesney in a game vs. Nevada.
Bob Chesney has UCLA undefeated and sitting inside the Top 10 in his first season leading the program. There are some questions surrounding his future in Los Angeles.
The coach is expected to be high on search lists given his track record of success. The Bruins‘ lacking support is fueling a narrative.
Will he leave for a more dedicated school?
Bob Chesney has UCLA rolling.
The Bruins are 8-0 after a shutout win over Nevada. They’re currently ranked No. 5 in the AP Poll. The College Football Playoff is a very real possibility.
Chesney is in Year 1 with his new team after spending two seasons at James Madison. With the Dukes, he went 21-6 and led the school to its first ever CFP appearance last year.
The head coach has experienced instant success at every stop. It will make him an attractive candidate for programs looking to fill voids in the offseason.
The coaching carousel has already started. Maryland, NC State, and Baylor fired their head coaches last week. Florida State ended the Mike Norvell project on Sunday. Many more will follow suit.
Chesney currently makes $6.75 million per year. He’ll probably get a raise after the season ends. It may be needed in order to keep him put.
There will be bigger brands with larger budgets that can offer a higher salary. Chesney will be the first call on someone’s list. He was asked about potential interest from outside suitors earlier this month. He insists that he’s happy in LA.

With that said, an attractive offer could be too good to pass up. And even if UCLA matches with money, lacking fan support could also push Chesney away.
UCLA football fans could not fill the Rose Bowl.
UCLA fans swear Bob Chesney won’t leave
Your team is 8-0, ranked No. 7 in the country, and drew JUST 24,611 fans today
That’s 27.4% of the Rose Bowl’s capacity. https://t.co/tQUzDq087z

UCLA drew less than 25,000 fans for its win over Nevada despite being undefeated. The Rose Bowl was 3/4 empty. Will it have an impact on Bob Chesney’s future?
UCLA’s inability to fill even half the Rose Bowl as an undefeated team ranked No. 7 in the country is the reason that Bob Chesney will eventually move on to a blue blood program when offered a job there.

There are some that believe small crowds will eventually push Chesney away to a more dedicated school. If the fans aren’t supporting the Bruins throughout an undefeated season, they never will.
Is Chesney willing to accept it or will he move on? Time will tell.
