Things are starting to get ugly between running back De’Veon Smith and Pittsburgh Maulers head coach Kirby Wilson.
On Monday, a video went viral showing De’Veon Smith getting cut by the Maulers over a situation regarding pizza and a cafeteria worker.
According to Smith, he requested pizza from a cafeteria worker instead of the chicken salad that was being served, and when the cafeteria worker told him he couldn’t have pizza and asked if that would be a problem, Smith claims that he said “yes” and walked away.
Former Michigan and XFL star RB De’Veon Smith was cut by the USFL for “alleged disrespect” to a hotel staff member in Birmingham.

Maulers head coach Kirby Wilson felt that Smith was disrespecting the cafeteria worker and immediately cut him without hearing Smith’s side of the story.

The team went on to release a statement claiming Smith had already broken several team rules before the situation with the cafeteria worker. After the Maulers loss on Monday, Wilson addressed the media and was adamant that Smith wasn’t meeting the standards of the football team with his actions.

“I have a set of standards that we go by as a football team,” “Those standards weren’t met. That individual (Smith) knew that we had a prior agreement that led to a later misunderstanding. Once those incidents were brought to my attention, I addressed them immediately.”
“These are life lessons. They have nothing to do with football,” “You’re trying to teach people how to respect other people, no matter how you see or view them.
“It’s very unfortunate this went out as a one-sided story, but I’ve been in this business too long. . . . We have a very, very high standard of football. It wasn’t met. When we have a player that steps out of line with what we believe in as a staff, it must be dealt with. I didn’t think twice about it.”
Smith is now threatening to leak messages to prove that Wilson and the Maulers are lying.
I was never made aware that I violated any team rules, let alone 3 in a 24hr span. I never disrespected anyone. Coach Kirby and I spoke after being released. In that talk, he said that he’d certainly vouch for my character.
