Utah football will play its biggest game of the season at home against Oregon on Saturday and the Utes are pulling a really awesome move with their beautiful new hand-painted helmets. They are honoring the school’s legendary student section, known as the MUSS.
They took the name from the fight song:
We’re up to snuff, we never bluff, we’re game for any fuss; no other gang of college men dare meet us in the muss.
In that case, “muss” refers to a noun that means state of disorder. It has since evolved to become an acronym for the students in Salt Lake City.

The Utes have sold-out 75-straight college football games at Rice-Eccles Stadium, dating back to the season-opener in 2010. It was the MUSS who got that streak started.
Although there may be a stigma that surrounds the Beehive State and its constituents, they get quite rowdy whenever Kyle Whittingham and his program take the field. The MUSS is known to be one of the most electric and passionate groups of fans in the entire country.
They are known most for the ‘3rd down jump,’ which is exactly how it sounds. Fans get super loud and jump up and down on third downs.
Their fervor will be necessary if the 6-1, 13th-ranked Utes are going to beat the 6-1, eight-ranked Ducks on Saturday night. And they will have a little bit of extra motivation!
Utah’s new helmets are awesome.
Utah announced on Friday afternoon that it will debut some beautiful new helmets for the game. Cam Rising was the first to break them out on the Pat McAfee Show.
The team dropped its official trailer for the lids shortly thereafter.
Each one of the helmets is hand-painted. They are perfect.
Across the bottom of the entire helmet is a silhouette of the students. Some of them are holding up the ‘U.’
A school flag is featured on the right side.
The MUSS flag is featured on the left side.
On the back is an homage to the 3rd Down Jump.
If Utah is going to take down Oregon, it needs the MUSS. The MUSS cannot let their team down during a game where players are wearing helmets in their honor.
