San Antonio Spurs rookie center Victor Wembanyama had insane expectations heading into his debut season. He was probably the most hyped prospect since LeBron James.

Somehow, he exceeded those expectations and became one of the true can’t-miss players in the entire NBA.  Now, he’s been rewarded with winning NBA Rookie of the Year.

Victor Wembanyama winning Rookie of the Year isn’t surprising. He was considered an overwhelming favorite by the time the season ended. That being said, until roughly halfway through the year, it was the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Chet Holmgren that was the odds-on favorite.

Ultimately, Wembanyama’s season was too much to ignore. He averaged 21.4 points, 10.6 assists, 3.9 assists, and 3.6 blocks. That blocks total was 50% more than the next-closest total, which belonged to Walker Kessler of the Utah Jazz.

Wembanyama improved significantly as the season went on too, especially in terms of offensive efficiency. Plus, he answered some durability concerns, which are always going to be there when someone is 7-foot-4.

All of that added up to a unanimous win of Rookie of the Year. That means that he joins a pretty awesome crew of unanimous winners.

Two of those players, Sampson and Robinson, are in the Basketball Hall of Fame. The other three seem very likely to make it. That’s pretty elite company.

Now, the San Antonio Spurs need to add more talent around Victor Wembanyama. They were dreadful this year, even with Wembanyama. Thankfully, plenty of talented players should be desperate to play with someone like Wembanyama.
