Florida Bro Breaks Kayak Fishing Record For Wahoo, Lands A Goddamn TORPEDO Off Of Boynton Beach

So let me preface all of this by saying that this is not a new official record, because the ruling body IGFA (International Game Fish Association) doesn’t keep separate records for kayak fishing…yet. With that in mind, this bro from Florida DID just catch the largest wahoo ever caught from a kayak while fishing in the continental United States (Hawaii not being counted here).

The previous unofficial record for the largest kayak fishing wahoo caught was 74-pounds, but this past weekend this Florida bro from Boynton Beach reeled in this 90-pound torpedo. Fishing in 110-feet of water with a live google eye (a favorite bait of Wahoo and Sailfish) the 90-pound wahoo would eventually drag him and his kayak out to sea, where he’d eventually land the fish in 300-feet of water. Here are some photos and videos that this bro posted to Imgur yesterday with his new unofficial record:

It pains me to think that this could’ve been me with that kayak fishing record wahoo because I live in Florida and I spent last weekend fishing. However, 1) fishing kayaks are expensive as hell and I can’t afford one yet and 2) I live on the west coast of Florida and was fishing for snook and tarpon, so it really couldn’t have been me at all…really I’m just super envious of this bro and it makes me want to get a fishing kayak asap.

The bro that caught this unofficial kayak fishing record wahoo shared his story over on Reddit’s ‘fishing’ subreddit:

An intern from work heard that I was into kayak fishing and wanted to give it a go. He’s from Iowa and his experience with saltwater fishing begins and ends with a charter in the gulf many years ago where he caught a small amberjack. He had also never been in a kayak before nor knew how to use any of the equipment. I set up his rig with a live goggle eye in 110 feet and drop the fish in the water.
As I’m explaining the different parts of the reel, the drag starts pulling tight. I exclaim that I think we already have a hit, I reel and now the drag screams out. As I get it under control I hand the reel to Ryan the intern and he continues the fight for 30 minutes. I’m screaming commands at him and he is completely overwhelmed. This is his first experience kayak fishing in the ocean and he is getting slayed by a beast. He tells me his hands are going numb and he hands it off. I get the fish to the surface and see the most massive wahoo. I am shaking with excitement, stick it with the gaff and drag it onto my lap and make the careful paddle back to shore.
Additionally, he was using an old beat up rusty Penn Senator 3/0 with line on it that was probably 20 years old. My other Avet I had planned to let him use had to go to the shop for clicker problems. So against all odds of inexperience, fish of a lifetime, and subpar gear we were able to land this monster on the kayak.

For what it’s worth, Wahoo is one of the tastiest fish on the planet. It ranked #4 in our completely scientific and totally legit ranking of The 25 Best Tasting Fish in the World, and a 90-pound wahoo means that this bro is eating like a king for the next month.
