The Washington Commanders are selling Redskins merch at the stadium and online
It’s now been six years since the Washington Commanders dropped the Redskins moniker. That hasn’t stopped the franchise from selling merchandise that features both the name and the logo.
The Washington Commanders are selling Mitchell & Ness throwback items featuring the Washington Redskins name and logo on gear honoring former players Art Monk, Darrell Green, and Sean Taylor in their team store and on the Fanatics website.

The team stated that trademark preservation is the reason for the merch, as limited commercial use is required to maintain their trademark rights over the name and logo. The Commanders also insisted the sale of the merch does not indicate any intention of reverting to the Redskins name or logo.
Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk, however, isn’t entirely buying what the Commanders are selling.
“It feels as if the Commanders are periodically dipping a toe a little deeper into the water regarding the possibility of bringing back both. Or maybe they’ve decided to pander, just a bit, to fans who want the old name and logo to return,” Florio wrote.
“Without researching the niceties of copyright law, it seems possible to shelve trademarks indefinitely without making it open season on the protected name and logo. And if they’re truly never going back to the name and the logo, why do they care about preserving the trademark rights? That fact alone suggests they’re reserving the right to bring both back — at the right time.”
After playing the 2020 and 2021 seasons as the “Washington Football Team,” the franchise officially unveiled their new Commanders name and logo in February 2022.
