There are rough rebuilding stretches, and then there is going nearly four full years without experiencing the part where everybody gets to celebrate afterward. West Virginia Wesleyan finally ended that nightmare Saturday, beating Post University 31-13 to snap a 35-game losing streak that dated all the way back to October 2022.
The Bobcats did not exactly stumble into the win, either. Backup quarterback Mike Evans Jr. came off the bench and threw four touchdown passes, the defense forced five turnovers, and West Virginia Wesleyan opened the 2026 season at 1-0 after spending the previous three seasons collecting nothing but losses.
West Virginia Wesleyan Had Not Won Since 2022
The last time the Bobcats won a football game, Tom Brady was still playing in the NFL.
West Virginia Wesleyan beat Alderson Broaddus 31-30 on Oct. 22, 2022, before losing the final three games of that season and every game in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Local station WDTV confirmed Saturday’s victory finally stopped the streak at 35.
That is a lot of postgame bus rides with absolutely nothing to talk about.
The streak also spanned coaching staffs, graduating classes and an entire generation of players who could theoretically have enrolled, completed a degree and left without witnessing a single victory.
Then Saturday started in a way that did not exactly suggest history was coming.
Starting quarterback Liam McGuire was injured during the first quarter, forcing Evans into the game. Post then took a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter.
Evans responded by apparently deciding four years was enough.
The Backup Quarterback Ended The Whole Thing
Evans tied the game with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Tariq Meredith before connecting with Amari Colon-Brown on a 52-yard score shortly before halftime.
That combination was nowhere near finished.
The game recap shows Evans found Colon-Brown again for touchdowns of 32 and 26 yards in the second half, finishing 14-of-22 for 303 yards and four touchdowns.
Colon-Brown caught four passes.
Three of them went for touchdowns.
Efficiency.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats defense intercepted Post four times, recovered a fumble and recorded three sacks. West Virginia Wesleyan finished with 421 yards of offense and, for the first time in 1,407 days, more points than the other team when the clock reached zero.
The win also gave new head coach Mike Kellar a pretty ridiculous start to his tenure. Kellar took over a program carrying one of the longest active losing streaks in college football and needed exactly one game to make it disappear.
Obviously, beating Post in a Division II opener is not going to lead SportsCenter for three hours, but it probably felt considerably bigger than that in Buckhannon.
