The women’s college soccer team at Florida Gulf Coast took over first place in the ASUN Conference with its win over North Florida on Thursday night. Keira Morgan finished with two assists and wore a punch from the opposing goalie after the game.

It resulted in a red card.

Rarely does a college soccer match end with a red card after the game had already come to a conclusion. This was deserved.

Florida Gulf Coast defeated North Florida.

The Eagles played the Ospreys in front of a 331-person crowd at Pickering Field in Fort Myers, Florida on Thursday. It did not take long for the home team to get on the board. It scored in the first minute when Taylor Latini found the back of the net on an assist that was credited to Morgan.

Morgan also found Kaitlin Gabelman for the second goal of the night early in the second half.

North Florida managed to avoid a shutout with a goal in the 62nd minute but it could not find a second and went on to lose 2-1. Florida Gulf Coast jumped into first place in the Atlantic Sun at 3-0-2 in the conference with an overall record of 6-1-5.

The match itself was one thing. What happened after the clock hit zero was the real story.

The women’s college soccer game ended with a punch.

This saga actually began with less than a minute to play. Eagles forward Keira Morgan, who was credited with a pair of assists, went after a pass into the box that was ultimately flagged as offside. In doing so, she bumped into Sofia Miliancano. She was issued a yellow card on the play.

Miliancano took issue with the contact. However, the fifth-year senior goalie for the Ospreys did not express her frustrations until the match was already over.

Florida Gulf Coast and North Florida shook hands without issue before it got spicy. Away from the handshake line, Morgan walked toward Miliancano. The latter chest-bumped the former as they neared closer. And then she threw a punch!

Morgan swiped right back at Miliancano but their teammates stepped in to break things up before it could escalate further. A brawl did not ensue. No more punches were thrown. However, the referee did decide to show a red card to North Florida’s goalie!

It is rare for a red card to be issued after a soccer match has already come to an end. Miliancano’s punch warranted the card.

As a result, she will not be allowed to play in her next match. The Ospreys will be without their starting goalie on Saturday.
