The 2023 World Series of Poker $10,000 buy-in Main Event is off and running. Thursday was the final flight of Day 1 (Day 1a, 1b, 1c, and 1d). Friday will begin Day 2abc.

This year’s World Series of Piker Main Event saw a record field enter the tournament. The field of 8,774 entrants surpassed the previous record of 8,663 and signals that Poker is once again booming.

There are many ways to enter the $10K World Series of Poker Main Event. Players can qualify through satellite tournaments where they win a $10K seat through success in smaller tournaments. But the most common way to enter, by far, is forking over the $10,000.

Now, imagine for one second that you spent $10,000 on an entry fee and you bust out on the very first hand. That happened to this person below who got in all of their chips on the first hand with KK. It also happened to another player below.

Blowing $10K to play a single hand has to sting. Serious players completely reset their lives leading up to the WSOP, particularly the Main Event, perfecting their sleep schedules and diet and living healthily. All of that preparation wasted because you got it all in with KK pre-flop on the very first hand dealt. Why??

In a similar hand, another player in Day 1D busted out on the very first hand in a Set over Set battle that was posted on PokerNews.

On a flop of Q82, the turn brought a 9. All of the money went in on the river. The players flipped over QQ and 88. And what’s wild here is neither held the nuts with either set. They both would have lost to J10 for a straight.

Such is the peril of playing in the World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event where nearly 8,800 players are in the field. That brings a LOT of loose play and poker players who have convinced themselves they need to take unnecessary chances or don’t want to be ‘pushed around’ at the table and make rash decisions.

Elsewhere in the Main Event Day 1D, Phil Hellmuth made this entrance with Dan Cates:

The Main Event will conclude 10 days from now on July 17th. There are a LOT of players to watch between now and then. But I’d say keep you eye on Chance Kornuth who had a strong Day 1D and bagged 241,500 in chips to finish 26th in his flight.

Kornuth currently sits 8th in WSOP Player of the Year standings with 2,675.24 points and has been playing incredibly strong poker lately, so keep your eyes on him to go deep.
