After 10 years, Wyndham Clark finally has explained the surprising, and very justifiable, reason why he once tweeted that he hated Baker Mayfield.
The tweet, which Clark posted on Dec. 3, 2016, read very simply: “I hate Baker Mayfield.”
For context, Wyndham Clark was playing golf for Oklahoma State University at the time. Baker Mayfield was a Heisman Trophy finalist that year while playing for the Oklahoma Sooners.
That alone could have been reason enough for Clark to say he hated Mayfield. But it wasn’t the only reason. In fact, there was a much bigger reason why Clark posted the tweet.
After winning the U.S. Open for the second time this past weekend, Wyndham Clark was a guest on Pardon My Take and was asked about the anti-Baker Mayfield tweet.
“I’m trying to decide if I should tell the story,” Clark explained. “Alright, screw it. I don’t care.People already hate me. So… no, it’s not that bad, my PR team’s here. They prepped me for everything. They didn’t prep me for this one.
“My girlfriend at the time cheated on me with Baker Mayfield.
“Well, here’s what I was saying, as I’ve said, as I have come to, like, I’m actually a Baker fan now; I think he’s a homie,” Clark continued after the laughing subsided a bit.
“You know, that’s your initial response, right? Screw that guy, but really screw, you know, but yeah. So I’m a Baker fan now, but you know, that’s where it came from.
“I hope, actually, this is a bro moment for us to be like, ‘Oh, bro, my bad, I didn’t know. She never told me,’” Clark added. “And I’ll be like, ‘Ah, it’s all good. We’re homies, let’s play golf.’ That’s where I hope this comes from.”
All’s well that ends well. Wyndham Clark and his girlfriend, Emily Tanner, went public with their relationship at the 2026 Masters, when she served as his caddie for the Par 3 Contest, while Baker Mayfield has been married to his wife, also named Emily, since 2019 and have a daughter together.
