Zach Wilson Renamed Jets’ Starting QB, Say He Still Believes He’s The Franchise’s Future

In a tragic turn of events for New York Jets fans, second-year bust Zach Wilson is set to start at quarterback this weekend in a pivotal matchup against the Detroit Lions due to an injury to Mike White. White injured his ribs in Sunday’s 20-12 loss to the Buffalo Bills.

Wilson, who has gone 5-2 in seven starts this season, was benched in favor of White following the Jets’ pitiful Week 11 loss to the New England Patriots, which saw the former BYU signal-caller shirk all responsibility for the team’s inept offensive performance, which featured more punts than first downs.

Since installing White as the starter, the Jets have gone 1-2. Despite their record, though, the offense has looked like much for a functioning unit with White at the helm (particularly as far as the wide receivers are concerned), which makes his absence from this weekend’s virtual playoff game against the Lions all the more painful.

Speaking to reporters on Friday ahead of the crucial matchup against the 6-7 Lions, Wilson said he “definitely believes” he’s still the future of the Jets franchise, according to ProFootballTalk.

“Yeah, I definitely believe in myself,” Wilson said. “Of course, I have all the confidence in the world. I think that’s how it should be. But you’ve got to be able to prove that. [via ProFootballTalk]

If Wilson performs well and leads the Jets to a win against the Lions, odds are he’ll be given the chance to close out the season (and the postseason if the Jets qualify) as the starter. The Jets are currently favored over the Lions by just 1 point, although that line will probably change with the news of Wilson’s being reinstalled as the starting QB.

To close out the 2022 season, the Jets — who are currently on the outside looking into the AFC Playoffs as the #8 seed — will face off against the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Seattle Seahawks, and Miami Dolphins.
