Today, March 26th, is Air Max Day – the day Nike and sneakerheads around the world celebrate one of the most beloved sneaker lines ever created. There are three Air Max shoe drops to celebrate the occasion on Nike.com and the SNKRS app.
The brainchild of legendary Nike designer Tinker Hatfield, the Air Max revolutionized sneaker technology with it’s iconic bubble, providing maximum cushioning with a translucent bubble under the midsole.
The Air Max 1 changed the sneaker game forever when it arrived in March 1987 – it felt like walking on a cloud and looked like a pair of kicks straight out of a dystopian sci-fi movie.
A new generation of sneaker had arrived.
As a ’90s kid, I loved my Air Maxes just as much – if not more – than my Jordans. I distinctly remember a trip to the Finish Line with my dad to cop the Air Max 93s, complete with a futuristic, Bladerunner-esque air cushion.
This year, the Air Max 90 is celebrating it’s 30th birthday. While the Air Max 1 was the pioneer, the Air Max 90 propelled the running shoe to new heights.
To us aging Millennials and Gen-Xers, the Infrared Air Max 90 owns big piece of real estate in our heads as the OG of all Air Maxes – an essential in any true sneakerhead’s wardrobe.

Today the Swoosh is celebrating the silhouette’s 30th anniversary with a limited release, including bringing back a popular Duck Camo colorway from 2013.
Nike is also releasing a the next generation of the Air Max 90: Nike Air Max 2090, starting at 7AM PT. Air Max 2090s feature a pillowy underfoot cushioning, along with an internal bootie and padded heel.
