The online dating site Match carried out their annual “Singles in America Study,” where over 5,000 singles in the U.S. were asked about their dating preferences. The survey, which has been done for the last eight years, discovered some interesting aspects of dating including peoples’ biggest turnoffs, how many drinks were too many on a first date, and the possibilities of dating across political parties.

According to the “nation’s largest, most comprehensive annual survey of single people,” 69% of singles were looking for a serious relationship. The survey found that 55% of singles have had a “Friends with Benefits” relationship. The study indicated that 29% of singles used “hanging out” as a path to building a relationship. The survey found that 54% said asking someone out 2-3 days in advance is appropriate first date behavior. It also said that 59% preferred a nice restaurant for a first date as opposed to 22% who said fast food was okay.

On a first date, 94% of women want their date to compliment her appearance (shocker). Also on a first date, 71% of women expect the men to kiss them on the cheek, 82% to hug them, and to nobody’s surprise, 91% of women expect men to pay the bill on the first date (another shocker). The biggest turnoff for a man to do on a first date is to check his phone regularly, only 1 in 10 women think this is appropriate. That means no texting on the first date because 66% said that was off-putting. Even putting your phone on the table during the first date is a no-no because 58% said they didn’t want to see that. Speaking of phones, better have the newest model otherwise 92% of women will judge you negatively. Plus, 14% saw having a cracked phone screen as a bad thing.

Being rude to the wait staff is a turnoff for 38% of women. More than 80% of women don’t think its appropriate for a man to have more than two drinks on a first date. Don’t ask for a bite of food because 58% of singles found this rude. Despite the differences, 45% of respondents said they would try to understand the other person’s perspective during a date; 26% of singles changed the subject; while 41% said they politely disagreed; and only 5% of singles would leave immediately.

Amazingly, despite this being absolutely polarizing times as far as politics go, single people are willing to date people who have different political affiliations. The Match survey found that 72% of singles would date someone with different political party affiliations than them. Specifically, 10% of singles see being a Republican as a deal-breaker and 5% view being a Democrat as a stumbling point.

When it comes to dating more than one person at one time, Gen Xers are 129% more likely than millennials and Boomers are 224% more likely than millennials to have dated more than one person at a time. Women were 69% (nice) more likely and men were 51% to have dated several people simultaneously.

Now, to the topic that’s been on your mind this whole time — robot sex. The survey found that 1 in 4 people would have sex with a robot if the opportunity would present itself. However, banging a robot was considered cheating by nearly half of the respondents. Sorry, your Ex Machina fantasy will probably cause your real, live, human girlfriend to dump you.
