While Adria Arjona was announced as being cast as Maxima in the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, fans aren’t buying it. Speculation is rampant that the actress is actually going to play Wonder Woman.

Earlier this month, Adria Arjona was officiallycast in James Gunn’s Superman sequel, with reports indicating she landed the role of Maxima — the warrior queen from the planet Almerac who arrives on Earth seeking a mate and sets her sights on Superman. Production is already underway in Atlanta ahead of the film’s July 9, 2027 release.

DC fans believe Adria Arjona’s casting as Maxima in Man of Tomorrow is actually a ruse to hide the fact that she’s actually playing Wonder Woman

The skepticism around Arjona’s casting started almost immediately, with fans speculating that the Maxima announcement is a front to hide the fact that she’s playing Wonder Woman. Additionally, early reports described her part in the film as a “mystery role” before Maxima was put forth by a handful of Hollywood trades.

Then, at CinemaCon in Las Vegas earlier this week, Michael B. Jordan introduced Arjona — his Thomas Crowne Affair co-star — as “the newest member of the DC world” and called her his “DC superhero” — treatment that some felt was unusually congratulatory for a relatively obscure character like Maxima.

There’s also the fact that casting someone of Arjona’s growing star power would be a bit of a waste on a character like Maxima, who general audiences have virtually no familiarity with.

Making the theory even more compelling is that James Gunn said as recently as last year that he thought Arjona would make a “great” Wonder Woman.

In addition to Arjona, Superman stars David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), and Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), will all be returning for Man of Tomorrow, while Lars Eidinger has been cast as the iconic intergalactic villain Brainiac.

Additional Man of Tomorrow cast members include Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart/Green Lantern, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, María Gabriela de Faría as Angela Spica/Engineer, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
