The Boys star Antony Starr, who leads the series as the deranged villain Homelander, responded to a video defending his co-star Erin Moriarty against the wave of online criticism about her appearance in Season 5.
Following the premiere of The Boys fifth and final season last week, there was widespread speculation and criticism of the appearance of actress Erin Moriarty, who features as Annie January / Starlight.
In June 2025, Moriarty publicly shared that she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease — an autoimmune condition that causes the thyroid to overproduce hormones, with symptoms including weight fluctuation, eye changes, and altered facial appearance.
“Autoimmune disease manifests differently in everybody/every body. Your experience will be different from mine. My experience will be different from yours. Perhaps greatly, perhaps minutely,” she shared on IG last year.
“One thing I can say: if I hadn’t chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would’ve caught this sooner. A month ago, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease. Within 24 hours of beginning treatment, I felt the light coming back on.”
The Boys star Antony Starr came to the defense of criticism of Erin Moriarty’s apperance on social media
Despite this, incels on social media have continued to obsess over her looks in the latest batch of episodes, leading to a public defense from Starr, who left a string of clapping emojis in the replies of a video that pushed back on the viral “downgrade” discourse.
The creator of the video argued that critics cherry-pick images to manufacture a narrative and that Moriarty has simply aged and gotten leaner over seven years. He also cited memes that mocked Chadwick Boseman’s weight loss before the public knew he had cancer.
