A man was baffled to discover the restaurant server doubled his tip moments after paying with Apple Pay. How do you get your money back?
A man used Apple Pay to pay for his meal at a restaurant. Thankfully, a notification for his payment came through on his phone while he was still in the establishment. Through it, he realized the server doubled the tip he had intended to leave behind without his consent.
In a TikTok with over 551,400 views, Jared Douglas (@jdouglas.film) shares in a short video with on-screen text what went down. He wrote, “POV you just got an Apple Pay notification that the server charged you double what you put down for the tip.”
“So you’re about to notify them they’re going to pay you back,” one on-screen text continues.
What To Do If A Restaurant Overcharges You
If you notice you were overcharged while still at the restaurant, it’s best to notify staff in person. Best-case scenario, the restaurant will refund you on the spot.
If you find out about the charge later on, you should call the restaurant directly and try to resolve the issue over the phone, My Bank Tracker shares. Staff should be able to issue the refund over the phone, but a visit to the restaurant may have to happen if not.
If a restaurant becomes difficult, you should submit a dispute with your bank.
Mistakes can happen, especially in restaurants. They are fast-moving, high-stress environments for workers. However, if the tip was intentionally overcharged, a police report can be filed against the restaurant.
Making a police report creates an official record of the incident. This report can also support the credit card dispute case with the restaurant to get your money back. A larger investigation can be launched if there is a pattern of reports filed against a restaurant.
Additionally, it’s always a good idea to keep a record of the receipt by taking a picture of it.
How Other Customers Handle Being Overcharged
Viewers in the comment section shared similar incidents they say happened to them. They also shared how they went about addressing it.
“I don’t even let them fix their mistake anymore. I just call the cops and press charges for credit card fraud. What the restaurant will do as an apology is they’ll take care of your whole dinner or give you a gift card so you come back,” one TikTok commenter wrote.
“My server took my card for tap to pay and picked their own tip without asking,” another added.
“I got an entire bar shut down by the TABC because a bartender did this to my friends and I,” a third chimed in.
Other service workers weighed in on the matter.
“As a server/bartender this is just crazy, even if the tip isn’t good, it’s not worth losing your job when there’s more money to be made,” one commented.
“This is insane. As a server, we literally turn in our tip slips at the end of the night & keep them on file in case of any mistakes. At all 5 restaurants I’ve ever worked at. Please just call the restaurant to remedy the situation. I promise they will give your $ back. Don’t punish all servers for one’s mistake,” another shared.
“As a server, just take what you’ve been tipped and be grateful. Not everyone has a bunch of money to tip y’all and you could be screwing them out of something important they need the money for,” a third said.
