A Kentucky man dissected an Arby's roast beef sandwich and thinks he discovered something alarming about it. Is it made from paste?
Arby’s is known for its roast beef sandwiches. The fast-food retailer even coined the famous “We have the meats” slogan. However, a Kentucky man dissected the roast beef on camera, sparking a conversation around the quality of the meat.
“Let’s dissect an Arby’s beef and cheddar,” the Kentucky man, @bigshipoppinn, begins in a video that now has over 170,000 views.
With rubber gloves on, the man holds up the beef and cheddar sandwich from Arby’s. Opening the sandwich wrapper, the man takes off the bun. From here, he picks up the roast beef. “This is not a roast beef sandwich. I wouldn’t call it roast beef at all,” he says.
The Kentucky man overlays a clip from an Arby’s store with a bag full of alleged paste. The worker is squeezing the bag, as it appears to be a liquid paste containing the meat. “You seen that paste… That paste is formed, and it’s molded into what you see on the sandwich,” the man says.
He addresses the doubters and skeptics but assures the viewers that the video is real.
“That paste is not roast beef, and the fact that they’re calling it roast beef is a problem. A lot of our food is tainted, y’all. We really need to watch what we consume—what we put in our body. These places are serving us stuff that’s no more than poison,” he accuses.
The man then asks former employees to chime in.
Arby’s Workers Weigh In
And they delivered.
“Arby’s General Manager here…. I resigned from my position a few months ago. It is exactly what you said ‘paste,’” one TikTok commenter wrote.
“I can confirm that’s exactly what it looks like before we cook it,” another added.
“I have worked for two different Arby’s. This is true,” a third claimed.
“I worked at Arby’s around 2017-2018 and I can 100% confirm that this is exactly what that meat bag looked like,” a fourth commented.
Others mentioned how when they worked at Arby’s back in the day, workers would shave the meat in-house.
“I used to work at Arby’s when I was young. The meat came on a big slab that they sliced in store,” one shared.
“Back in the 80’s, I worked for Arby’s for a short time in my teens and we did shave the roast beef. What you’re showing us is absolutely disgusting,” another added.
Does Arby’s Use A Paste To Make Its Roast Beef?
The use of liquid meat has been a food urban legend that Arby’s can’t seem to shake. In 2005, Snopes confirmed that the Arby’s liquid meat rumor was false.
Tasting Table reports that the roast beef arrives at Arby’s prepackaged. This airtight package contains a gelatinous-type broth accompanied by the meat. The package simply looks nothing like the roast beef that comes on the sandwich until the entire bag is cooked.
Business Insider shares that the roast beef is slow-roasted in the roasting bag for three to four hours. Afterward, the roast beef is sliced up and cut up for the sandwiches.
Arby’s itself addressed the rumor in a comment to Snopes.
“Our product does not arrive as a paste, gel or liquid. Arby’s Roast Beef consists entirely of Beef and a Self-Basting solution, which contains just enough water to keep the product juicy throughout our restaurants’ 3-hour roasting process and during slicing — this ensures that we will deliver the quality that our customers have come to expect from our famous roast beef sandwiches,” Jim LowderArby’s, LLC Quality Assurance.
Overall, considering what the bag looks like, it’s valid to raise eyebrows and question the quality. However, it appears the liquid meat bag is a way to transport meat and used to enhance the flavor when cooking.
