James Gunn is the writer and director of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy films (amongst other things). He’s the man responsible for bringing Peter Quill, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot. There are some minor spoilers here if you haven’t seen the first Guardians of the Galaxy film so just be aware of that.

The most emotional moment of the first film in this Marvel franchise came at the end of the movie when Groot, a gigantic alien made out of trees, sacrificed himself to save his friends. For a few minutes, viewers thought that was the last we were going to see of Groot until the credits ran and we saw Baby Groot. A tiny sapling that was dancing around to music.

Everyone, myself included, assumed that this was just Groot reborn. Since it was a sapling from one of Groot’s branches we all just made the assumption that Groot would regrow into the total badass that he is. Well, we were all wrong.

James Gunn, writer and director, took to Twitter yesterday with some news that shook Guardians fans all over the world:

This does make sense. A sapling growing out of Groot’s remains after he sacrificed his body to save his friends after the iconic ‘We are Groot’ scene would definitely be one of Groot’s children and not Groot himself. I don’t know why this didn’t click for any fans, myself included.

Now, we’ve got science Twitter trying to troll James Gunn:

Troll all you want but we now know that Baby Groot = / = Groot. It’s his son. And that’s where we’re at in the MCU right now.
