A bartender has gone viral on TikTok after sharing how a certain method of ordering drinks is favored in the club.
Is there a right way to order drinks? For a bartender who sees it night after night, there definitely is.
In a viral TikTok that has amassed 3.1 million views, TikToker and bartender Makayela Valentine (@missmakayela.valentine) made her feelings clear. The video featured on-screen text that read, “Working at the club and someone orders their drink thru their Notes App instead of yelling.” In the video itself, Valentine filmed herself excitedly passing a drink to this imaginative patron, giving a nod of approval.
“THANK YOU,” she wrote, with a couple of glass-clinking emojis.
Do Bartenders Really Prefer When You Order Via Notes App?
Despite this, some commenters said bartenders didn’t react so well when they did this.
“I did this before and the bartender (male) deadass caught SUCH an attitude with me,” one complained. “It was SO loud and I was trying to help both of us.”
“The one time I did it the lady rolled her eyes and had to walk away to grab her glasses,” a second added.
While a third simply wrote, “Hell no I’ve seen another bartender say this is rude.”
And a fourth remarked, “My friend and I did this once and the bartender just looked at it and said ‘I’m not reading that, say it if you want your drinks.'”
In light of this, a fifth commenter declared, “For any bartenders here who have a problem with this: I’ve served deaf people and those with speech differences who use their phone to order. Don’t be a d—, it’s not that serious, we’re all just tryna throw back some giggle juice.”
Elsewhere, a sixth commenter said they do this “religiously,” which suggests that using this method doesn’t automatically make you a difficult customer.
People Are Worried About Doing The Wrong Thing
On the r/CasualConversation subreddit, one user shared how they used this ordering method. However, they seemed to worry that they were making a huge social mistake.
“I was at a really loud club Friday night and had the idea of just showing my drink order to the bartender on my phone because I was having trouble getting them to hear my last name correctly,” they wrote. “I made it big font and low brightness on my phone so I wouldn’t blind them, they didn’t seem to mind but it looked like they were not used to people doing that lol. Has anyone else done that before? Do you think it could come off as rude?”
Multiple responses appeared to agree with the TikToker.
“As a club bartender I love it when people do this,” one wrote. “The best would be if you could write underneath the order either “paying cash [or] under tab (your name).” This would save my voice from yelling that question for the millionth time.”
“As a bartender with bad hearing, I agree a thousand times,” a second agreed.
“I’d say it can only be a positive thing for the bartenders,” a third remarked. “They also lose the strain of having to hear and deliver the correct order and charge to the right tab. They might have been positively surprised, of course they’re not used to it. I’d say most people don’t think of doing that, everyone just goes into a shouting match against the noise. It sounds like a great LPT!”
They continued, “When I’m in loud places, I just wish I could just type up the stuff I wanna say to the people I’m with because I really don’t have the energy to fight the noise. And I also have a hard time understanding people and focusing through the noise, wipes away all my energy.”
So, ultimately, despite some commenters’ reservations, the TikToker seems to be right.
