A couple of weeks ago, we brought you the news that Sasha Baron Cohen was spotted driving down the street in Los Angeles in FULL Borat gear, leading to immediate and widespread speculation about what exactly the notorious prankster was up to. Well, speculate no more my friends, as Collider is reporting that not only is a sequel to Borat happening, but it’s already been shot and screened for Hollywood executives.
According to Collider‘s report, while “plot details remain vague”, the gist of the story will reportedly see Borat thinking he’s now famous following the original film.
What we know is that Borat is no longer the little-known Kazakh TV personality he played in the original 2006 movie. The public knows who he is now, so he has to go “undercover” to interview people. One source described the film as “Cohen playing Borat playing Cohen,” but since we published this story, another source reached out to refute that description while still confirming the project’s existence. Now, while the project is clearly in the works, it’s unclear exactly who is paying for the project or where it will pop up once completed:
It’s unclear who is paying for the sequel, but it wouldn’t surprise us if Borat 2 was being financed by a deep-pocketed streamer. After all, 20th Century Fox released the first film, but the Disney-owned studio is unlikely to be prioritizing R-rated comedies in the midst of the pandemic. The film was based on pre-existing IP created by Cohen, so it’s also possible that he has retained ownership over the character and is free to do with it as he pleases.
Regardless of how, why, or when a Borat sequel arrives, it’ll be met with open arms as the original Borat is one of *the* definitive cult classic comedies of the last 20 years.
