U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at the Calexico West Port of Entry in Southern California seized a whopping $8.4 million worth of fentanyl pills.

The pills were hidden inside a 1995 pickup truck driven by a 23-year-old male trying to enter the United States from Mexico at 9:55 a.m. on Nov. 3.

After an initial examination, Border Patrol agents flagged the driver and the vehicle for further inspection.

During that inspection, CBP officers observed irregularities when they used the port’s imaging system to screen the vehicle.

They then brought in a CBP K-9 unit which produced a positive alert for the presence of narcotics.

Agents ended up seizing a total of 41 packages containing 840,000 pills and weighing 185.41 pounds that were hidden in the spare tire and rear seat of the pickup truck.

“Fentanyl continues to be the deadliest drug threat our nation has ever encountered. This seizure is indicative of the exceptional performance our officers display day after day”, Roque Caza, Calexico Area Port Director, said in a press release. “Their vigilance and dedication are vital assets that make a significant difference in our communities.”

The driver of the truck was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security Investigations.

Also on Nov. 3, Laredo Sector Border Patrol agents in Texas seized 3,463 pounds of illegal marijuana worth more than $2.9 million.

The 156 bundles of marijuana were found hidden inside a tractor trailer.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle were both arrested.

That seizure in Laredo, Texas came just three days after cocaine with a street value of $3,553,513 was confiscated at the Colombia-Solidarity Bridge.

“A significant seizure like this one underscores the seriousness of the narcotics threat we face every day and the commitment of our frontline officers to carry out our border security mission,” Port Director Albert Flores, Laredo Port of Entry, said in a statement.
