Charlie Day Shares Story About Tripping On Mushrooms At A Phish Show

FX

  • Charlie Day had a fairly wild night after overindulging at a Phish show in 1996
  • The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star recounted the time he and his friends acquired an “extraordinary amount of very powerful mushrooms” at The Clifford Ball

A major part of the reason Phish has been a force to be reckoned with on the jam band scene for more than three decades is that its fans never know what to expect when they head to a live show—at least as far as the music is concerned.

Sure, the setlist might change on a nightly basis, but you can always count on seeing people ripping massive hits of nitrous from balloons outside the venue, at least one person uttering the words “I think I took too much acid” while inside, and wooks doing wook things basically everywhere you turn.

I’d argue overindulging in psychedelics at a concert is a right of passage for any Phish fan, and based on a story he shared on a recent episode of The Always Sunny Podcast, Charlie Day was initiated into that club when he attended The Clifford Ball in 1996.

I recently got the chance to chat with Day about a wide variety of topics but was sadly unaware of his Phish fandom, as I definitely would’ve loved to explore this incident and ask him about some other (hopefully more enjoyable) experiences he’s had as a phan.

Here’s what he had to say about the incident via Live For Live Music:

“We were so low rent. We went with this other group of kids. They were kind of rich kids, they had a Volvo, they had a nice tent and sh—t, and we had a tarp.

We were like ‘Aye, we’re gonna try to make a tent out of this tarp, can we use your frying pan?’ They were making like making f—king pancakes and sh—t, and we totally f—ked this kid’s frying pan up trying to hammer in stakes…

Then we got our hands on an extraordinary amount of very powerful mushrooms and ate way too many of them. I remember passing out within the first five minutes, throwing up, and when I came to, I was already tripping a thousand times harder than I already had.

This was within the first 30 minutes. I was like, ‘OK, this is going to be quite a ride.’ I remember just trying to hang onto my sanity for dear life.

At one point, we’re in the concert and we’re sitting on the lawn. All of a sudden, everyone turns around. They’re looking right at us, and we’re like, ‘Why is this happening? What the f—k is happening?” only to realize there’s a marching band moving right behind us and we don’t realize what’s going on.”

Sounds about right.
