Chevy Chase Rips Will Ferrell And Calls The Current SNL ‘The Worst F*cking Humor In The World’

Chevy Chase is a study in contradictions. For much of his career, the now 74-year-old comedy legend and SNL‘s first breakout star was immensely funny, relatable, and charismatic. But, his second act has been painful. Chase is known to be stubborn and impossible to work with in Hollywood, most notably on his 2009 role on NBC’s late sitcom Community. The show’s star, Donald Glover, said Chase told him, “People think you’re funnier because you’re black,” a comment that didn’t surprise other cast members and show creator Dan Harmon, who led a “fuck you, Chevy” chant at the Season 3 wrap party.

Geoff Edgers of The Washington Post spent many hours with Chase at his home in New York’s Westchester County and says the original SNL cast member can be “arrogant, unpredictable and mean,” but also “hilarious, sensitive and surprisingly supportive.” The profile piece paints the picture of a man willing to work again but has burned too many bridges. At times, he sounds icy, resentful, and flat-out jealous of the newer generation of comedians. It’s kind of sad.

I recommend reading the whole thing if you’ve got the time. But if you don’t, I’ve plucked out a few juicy nuggets for you bros to sink your teeth into. Basically, the Weekend Update creator thinks everyone at SNL now is a talentless hack and he’s disappointed Lorne Michael’s stamps his name on that flaming pile of trash.

“First of all, between you and me and a lamppost, jeez, I don’t want to put down Lorne or the cast, but I’ll just say, maybe off the record, I’m amazed that Lorne has gone so low. I had to watch a little of it, and I just couldn’t fucking believe it.”

When Chevy is reminded that SNL has millions of viewers each week, he says this:

“That means a whole generation of shitheads laughs at the worst fucking humor in the world,” he says. “You know what I mean? How could you dare give that generation worse shit than they already have in their lives? It just drives me nuts.”

When did it start to turn for the worse? Conveniently when he left after the first season to pursue movies.

“I’d have to say, that after the first two years, it went downhill,” Chase says. “Why am I saying that? Because I was in it? I guess. That’s a horrible thing to say. But certainly I never had more fun. I really loved it and enjoyed it. I didn’t see the same fun thing happening to the cast the next year.”

Warning: Chevy is about to rip on tha god, Will Ferrell. Not for the faint of heart.

But what about Will Ferrell doing George W. Bush?

“Just not funny. Makes $25 million a picture.”

Tina Fey?

“I liked Tina. I didn’t see what all the folderol was about. She was good.”

How about Kristen Wiig?

“I liked her a lot. She had two things going for her. She had clear-cut chops, and she was pretty, too. But what happened to her? Where did she go?”

Eddie Murphy?

“I thought Eddie Murphy was funny. Gumby. I found that funny and people loved that. . . . Stevie Wonder, he did well. [Pause.] It’s not that hard, for Christ’s sake. Your skin’s the same color. You just put on some sunglasses and do this.”

I’ve watched the National Lampoon’s movies hundreds of times with my dad. It is like our strongest bond. Chevy, please don’t ruin my relationship with my dad. You’re toeing the line.

*watches this 20 times to remember the Chevy I love*

The anti-drug people gave him a $50 savings bond for his brave contribution to crime-fighting, and upon the bond’s maturity 10 years later, he used it to buy his very first bag of marijuana.
