Tonopah Valley put its high school football season on pause following an awkward police investigation. The Phoenix may or may not play another game in 2026 after serious allegations of “inappropriate player-on-player behavior” over the summer.
It has already canceled on its first two opponents.
There are seven games remaining on the high school football schedule beyond this week. They are all in jeopardy.
Tonopah Valley decided to suspend the high school football season.
Tonopah Valley High School is located in Maricopa County, Arizona. Its campus, which opened in 2006, sits ~50 miles west of Phoenix. Total enrollment hovers around 900 students. The school serves only grades 9-12.
As a member of the Arizona Interscholastic Association, the Phoenix competes in the Metro 5 region of Division 2A. The high school football program is two years removed from the best season in school history.
Tonopah Valley went 12-1 in 2024 and reached the state semifinal. It lost by only six points.
Last year was not as successful. The Phoenix finished at 4-1 in the region but finished at 4-7 overall. Even if it was not the season they had hoped, there was a lot of momentum for 2026. Not anymore
Tonopah Valley canceled its first game of the season on Friday as its opponent was getting on the buses to travel. It also canceled its upcoming game against Scottsdale Christian. Both JV games were also canceled. Every other game from this point forward remains at risk of cancellation.
Superintendent Dr. Mike Waters recently announced the Saddle Mountain school district’s decision to suspend the high school football season indefinitely. That applies to varsity and junior varsity.
“We understand that cancelling a football game affects our students, families, coaches and community. However, the safety and protection of our students must always come before athletics or any other consideration; therefore, Varsity and JV football is suspended until further notice.”
A potential timeline for return is unclear. Multiple members of the faculty were also placed on administrative leave.
Awkward allegations led to a police investigation.
This sudden high school football cancellation (and subsequent suspension) stems from a report of a “potentially serious incident involving faculty members and members of the high school football team.” The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office took an official police report over a “dry humping” incident that occurred during a preseason camp over the summer.
Local police issued a full investigation into the allegations. However, the victims were not willing to press charges so the report was closed.
That did not prevent Tonopah Valley High School or the Saddle Mountain school district from taking action! They worked closely with law enforcement to gather details. Multiple faculty members were placed on administrative leave and the high school football season was suspended. Neither Winters nor the school district are able to comment further at this time.

According to Alex Martin of USA Today, Tonopah Valley received the concerning report on Friday afternoon. An initial review of the allegations led to the sudden cancellation of the high school football game against the Odyssey Institute. The school was able to provide Scottsdale Christian with more notice. Weeks 3 and beyond are in jeopardy. It seems like the season is over.
