Once again, someone was either so brazen or so dumb that they thought they could load up their vehicle with illegal drugs and just drive right across the border and into the United States. It makes one wonder how many times they have succeeded in doing just that for them to feel comfortable enough to try such a thing.
According to a press release posted on Wednesday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and DEA agents found over $20 million worth of cocaine concealed in a commercial truck hauling rebar in California.
The truck and its flatbed trailer were hauling 269 bundles of rebar, but also contained more than half a ton of cocaine, when the driver attempted to pass through into the United States at the Calexico Port of Entry.
When Customs and Border Protection officers X-rayed the trailer with agents from Homeland Security Investigations and the Drug Enforcement Administration, they noticed irregularities in the floorboards. A drug-sniffing dog then detected the drugs.
Upon further inspection, the officers found that cocaine filled the planks when they unscrewed them from the trailer’s wooden floor after unloading the rebar. The trailer contained 366 packages totaling 1002.13 pounds of cocaine.
It was the Southern District of California’s second-largest cocaine seizure in 2026. The biggest seizure occurred in May when an underground cross-border tunnel was linked to the discovery of almost a ton of cocaine valued at an estimated $45 million.
The driver of the truck could end up serving life in prison
The government’s motion to detain the 44-year-old defendant from Mexicali stated that the quantity of cocaine found is “a tremendous amount of drugs, even by the standards of this district.” At his hearing in federal court on Tuesday, the driver pleaded not guilty.
He now has a detention hearing scheduled for Monday and faces possible life in prison and, at the very least, a mandatory minimum of 10 years behind bars if found guilty of the charges made against him.
