A flight attendant reveals her biggest pet peeve when passengers order coffee on a flight. Is is best to skip coffee on flights entirely?
Getting a drink can be one of the highlights of a flight. When the cart makes its way up the alley, excitement builds as your turn is about to be up. Drinks that can be ordered are water, juices, sodas, tea, coffee, or alcohol if you’re feeling frisky. One flight attendant reveals a major no-no when ordering coffee on a flight.
In a TikTok with over 125,500 views, Riley Stellato (@rileydunworthstellato) shares her biggest pet peeve when passengers order coffee on flights.
“I will never understand why people get on the plane and order coffee and then assume I’m a psychic,” Stallato begins.
Stellato shares how passengers will assume that she’ll know if the customer will want cream and sugar. However, she will always give a black coffee out unless the passenger specifies that they want cream and sugar.
The flight attendant says she’ll usually continue serving the rest of the flight and then is hit with the question: “Can I have cream and sugar?”
“I never understand why people don’t order, ‘Hi, may I have a coffee with cream and sugar,’” Stellato vents.
She refers to the Starbucks ordering process and how customers will order exactly what they want.
“Why are we not doing the same thing on the plane?” she wonders.
The PSA continues, and Stellato begs viewers to order their coffee the correct way.
“I’m begging the general public. Please tell me how you take your coffee. … It’s just one of my biggest pet peeves, and I’ll never understand it,” she concludes.
‘Genuinely One Of My Biggest Pet Peeves’
Flight attendants chimed in and agreed with Stellato and how annoying coffee orders can be.
“The way my eye twitches over this conversation every dang day,” one TikTok commenter wrote.
“Genuinely one of my biggest pet peeves,” another added.
“‘Would you like milk and sugar?’ on repeat,” a third chimed in.
“I asked a passenger ‘How do you take your coffee?’ they responded ‘In a cup,’” one shared.
“My favorite: ‘Can I have a black coffee?’ * I serve a black coffee * ‘Where is the cream and sugar?’ I feel you girl,” one commented.
Other flight attendants added that there are hundreds of people who need to be served, and some passengers fail to realize this.
“People who aren’t F/As don’t get it. A whole plane full of people! I want to hug anyone that knows how to order their coffee,” one wrote.
“People be thinking we have only one person to serve?? Babe there are 200 people still waiting to be served,” another vented.
Should You Get A Coffee While Flying?
Getting a nice caffeine buzz from coffee may sound enticing, but there are also reasons why you should avoid it while flying.
According to Food & Wine, the two drinks that passengers should avoid entirely when flying are tea and coffee. When getting any drinks that require hot water, the flight crew will use tap water from the plane.
Testing has confirmed water quality on board can be poor on major airlines. Only two out of ten airlines received an A grade from testing conducted by the Center for Food as Medicine & Longevity.
Tasting Table shares that airplanes only have one tank to hold water. This tank handles all the water for toilet flushing, hand-washing, and drinking water.
Of course there are strict regulations for water quality installed by the Federal Aviation Administration. Water tanks are often drained and refilled, but deep cleaning of the tank takes place quarterly by law.
However, many flight attendants believe this is not nearly enough cleaning to ensure the water is good quality. This is why many have recommended avoiding hot drinks that use the water from the tank.
