Dallas Woman Starts Cutting Crust Off Dave’s Killer Bread. Then She Notices Something Strange: ‘That’s The Killer Part’

If you want to avoid the ultra-processed, high-calorie white bread at the grocery store, you might reach for something like Dave’s Killer Bread. The bread brand touts health benefits like high protein and fiber content, as well as the use of whole grain, organic, and non-GMO ingredients.

However, one Dave’s Killer Bread customer was shocked by what she found while cutting the crust off a slice of the brand’s 21 Whole Grains and Seeds bread.

The viral video, which was viewed over 4 million times, was posted by Texas-based content creator Meg Nickerson (@themegnickerson).

What Did She Allegedly Find Inside Dave’s Killer Bread?

“Woodchips in our bread,” she wrote in the video’s text overlay.

Nickerson addresses the company directly. “This message is for Dave’s Killer Bread and Dave’s Killer Bread only,” she begins. “Actually, this is a public service announcement, maybe.”

She says she was cutting the crusts off a slice, intending to prepare a sandwich for her daughter.

“There’s actual wood chips in the loaf of bread,” she says, while holding the small objects in her hand.

She couldn’t tell what it was right away. “At first, I was gaslighting myself. I was like, ‘Maybe it’s some sort of grain or oat or something,’ but no, it’s for sure a wood chip,” she says.

Nickerson adds that the object wasn’t only in one slice, but throughout the entire loaf. “So check your Dave’s Killer Bread for wood chips,” she continues. “‘Cause my daughter was literally half a second from eating a sandwich.”

Some Viewers Were Alarmed, While Others Made Jokes

“Report to the fda,” one user urged. “This is a recall. People could get injured. This shows that their plant and food safety is poor.”

Nickerson responded to that comment, writing, “I did right away.”

Another user claims to have discovered the same. “Hold up, I just checked my bread and I have them too,” they wrote. “I grabbed a random piece from the middle of my loaf.”

“That’s why it’s so expensive,” joked a third. “Lumber prices are outrageous.”

“That’s the killer part of the bread lol,” quipped another.

How Could This Have Happened?

When looking at the ingredients of the 21 Whole Grains and Seeds loaf, one specific ingredient stands out as a possible culprit, which is oat fiber.

This ingredient is commonly made not from the actual cereal grain, but from its husk, or hull, the protective layer around it.

While safe for human consumption in small amounts and a good source of insoluble fiber, if not ground properly, it can be hard and wood-like, meaning it could pose a risk of injury.

If you find an object that could potentially be harmful inside a packaged food, that is a federal matter. Consumers can report the issue to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) or the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), based on what kind of product it is. However, BroBible can’t definitively verify whether that’s what Nickerson discovered.

In an email to BroBible, a Dave’s Killer Bread spokesperson wrote, “At Dave’s Killer Bread, we take quality matters very seriously. We are in contact with the consumer to address their concern.”

BroBible also reached out to Nickerson via email for comment.
