The first look at Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool 3, which officially began production earlier this summer, has hit the internet. The film will be the first R-rated entry in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (at least so they’ve said).

Reynolds, making his first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the character, was photographed in the iconic red costume that he previously rocked in 2016’s Deadpool and 2018’s Deadpool 2.

In addition to Reynolds returning as the Merc with the Mouth, Deadpool 3 will also feature Hugh Jackman reprising his role as Wolverine/Logan for the first time since 2017’s Logan, which was originally conceived and sold as being Jackman’s final performance as the character.

Alongside Reynolds and Jackman, Deadpool 3 will also star Succession breakout and Emmy winner Matthew Macfayden and The Crown star Emma Corrin. At this time, both of their roles have yet to be revealed.

Deadpool 3, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters on May 3, 2024, is directed by Shawn Levy — director of projects such as Night at the Museum, Stranger Things, and Real Steel — who has recently worked with Reynolds on both The Adam Project and Free Guy.

The film is set to be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Phase 5”, which shakily began earlier this year with the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

In addition to the third film in the Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy franchises, Phase 5 is also set to feature The Marvels (releasing in November of this year), Captain America: Brave New World (July 26, 2024), Thunderbolts (December 20, 2024) and Blade, which is slated for 2025.

A bevy of Disney+ series such as Echo, Ironheart, Agatha: Coven of Chaos, season two of Loki and What If..?, and Daredevil: Born Again, are also set to be released in the coming years as a part of Phase 5. Given the weak viewership of Secret Invasion thus far, though, it’ll be interesting to see what Disney does with their streaming service output now that Bob Iger is back in charge.

Despite the impending presence of Jackman’s Wolverine in Deadpool 3, Marvel Studios has still yet to announce when their first Mutant-focused film will hit theaters.
